I'll say it plainly: If your project timeline matters, 3M black tape and 3M double sided adhesive are not upgrades. They're the baseline.
I coordinate emergency repairs and buildouts for occupied commercial buildings. I don't get to design from a blank page. I get called when something is already wrong—a tenant moved in early, a water line burst, an inspection is two days out, and baseboard trim is sitting in a pile on the floor. That changes how you think about materials. You stop asking “What's cheapest?” and start asking “What can I trust when there's no time for a second trip?”

The other counterargument is price. 3M products aren't always the cheapest. If you're doing a job with no deadline, no inspection, and no consequences, use whatever you want. But when a client is waiting, a mezzanine floor has to pass a fire inspection, or a baseboard trim has to look finished by Monday, the cost of uncertainty is far higher than the price of a better tape.
My rule: ask what's NOT included before you ask the price
I've learned to ask “what's NOT included” before “what's the price.” That's true for vendors, and it's true for materials. The cheap option might not include rework tolerance. It might not include the ability to hold in a cold garage. It might not include reliable performance when the foil board seam is slightly misaligned. The 3M option is transparent about what it can and can't do. That transparency is why it earns the professional slot on my list.

So here's my rule, after 400+ rush orders and more late nights than I want to admit: if I can't explain why a material is going to fail, I use the one whose failure modes are documented. In my bag, that's 3M black tape for electrical and abrasion fixes, 3M double sided adhesive for trim and panel setup, and the correct 3M foil tape for foil board seams. I might pay more upfront. But the invoice I'm trying to avoid isn't the one at the supply house—it's the one that comes with a callback, a missed deadline, and a client who starts losing confidence in you.
That's the cost nobody puts in the budget. It's the one I refuse to pay twice.
